What’s Yoga?
“Yoga is a light which, once lit, will never dim . The more you practice, the brighter the flame”.
Yoga is a science, a discipline, a philosophy, an art and an attitude. It is a path for a healthy integration.
Yoga means “union” in sanscrit, and it is associated also to a series of methods and technics to attain this union, which can be interpreted as a union with our own Self, a harmonic integration of all aspects of human being, and/or as the union of the individual with Cosmos; the experience of the integration of the individual to all of the surrounding universe. In this union what prevails is the feeling of being one and the same with the Whole.
Yoga is a way of knowledge, clear and attainable for the needs and possibilities of modern life.
A means to attain relaxation, rest, balance and harmony; to know ourselves better and to use, in a more efficient way, our potential.
The goals are set by the student or practitioner and Yoga never asks to believe in anything except one’s own experience.
Some authors like Mircea Eliade, sustain that Yoga was already known and practiced in the ancient Indu civilization that flourished in the third and second millennium BC.
Yoga is based mainly in a dynamic principle, (prana energie) and its direct relation with breathing.
The essence of the messaje is that the Self (our own essence) can only be known through the Union (yoga), and not by mere speculation. The Self can not be realized outside ourselves but in our deep inside.
According to most authors, there are five principal trails: Karma Yoga, the path of action, Bhakti Yoga, the path of devotion and love, Gñana Yoga, the path of inquiry and discernment, Raja Yoga the path of introspection and Hatha Yoga, the path of balance of the inner energies.

More than any other teacher Iyengar renewd Hatha Yoga in the process of bringing it to a Western audience. In the West , Iyengar encountered a very different mentality than in India. People were enthusiastic about Hatha Yoga , thirsty for knowledge , and willing to work hard to attain it. Rather than repeat mechanically what he learned from his teacher , Krishnamacharya, he inquired deeply into each of the postures in order to perfect them.
